Module 2

The reading for the week focused on chapters 4, 5 and 6. Chapter 4 center its focus on Intelligence, creativity, learning styles, learning challenges, and gifted students. The main focus in chapter 5 was language. In the chapter the main topics presented are: the development of language, diversity in language development, dialect differences in the classroom, teaching immigrant students, teaching students who are English language learners and ESL students with special challenges. Chapter 6 presented information on diversity in classrooms, economic and social differences, ethnicity and race in teaching and learning, gender in teaching and learning, and creating compatible culturally classrooms. All three chapters elaborated on extremely important issues and topics that all educators have to take seriously and be informed on.
Chapter 4 ,5 and 6 gives important information for all educators. I personally found chapter 5  interesting. In the fall I will be starting my ESL endorsement and it is my personal goal to work in a dual language classroom in the future. I found relevant information in chapter 5. It was very interesting for me to read on language development language diversity and ESL education in general. Chapter 5 touches on how the country is becoming more and more diverse and how multiple languages are being spoken in the classrooms. We are presented with ways to understand how language develops and how as Educators we can support emerging students. There wasn't a specific topic Crescent it on chapter 5 that catch my attention and it was section 5.2  when it's states that bilingual children as those being exposed to two languages from birth and they reach milestones in both languages at almost the same time. There is a myth about bilingualism that says learning two languages in early childhood will confuse or delay a child acquisition of English and I truly believe this statement is false.
I have five children and all five have been raised in a bilingual family since birth. I can say from my experience, that children are capable of learning two languages at the same time.   I have to say that the acquisition of English won't be affected or vice versa. I have a strong belief that every child learns different. To some children learning two languages at the same time will be easy, while for others it might be more challenging, but never impossible. I have five children of my own all of them are bilingual they can read write and speak English and Spanish. My experience has been that it has been easier for some of them, While others have faced challenges but with persistence and support have succeeded. I embrace the idea that every child is very unique and capable.
I disagree with the statement that it can be confusing for children. I have a 3 year old who can understand both languages but prefers to speak English .One can question her in English or Spanish and she will answer mostly in English. so she is understanding but she is choosing English over Spanish.  Dual-language Learning can be a challenge but I truly embrace the idea that it is worth it. I am eager to start my endorsement in the fall and learn about bilingualism dual language learning and Linguistics in general. I have not done a lot of research or how to read many books about it but I have experience it with my own children and it's beautiful but a challenge.

  1. Hey Crystal,

I agree that students will not be delayed while learning two languages at the same time an I believe that they will be even more attentive to learning both. I am also gong into ESL in the Fall however, I Speak very little Spanish. I feel with the proper support and teachings that all our ESL students will be successful. I applaud you on your ability to do dual languages your student swill be lucky to have you. No two children are the same when it pertains to anything, but with our help they will be great at whatever they do.

  2. I agree with many things that you mentioned in your blog. Diversity in the classroom is very important. I think that ESL students need to be more involved with regular students and be more exposed to different cultures. Some students are afraid of talked to other students in english because of the difference in culture and language.

  3. I agree children can learn both languages and wont be confuse. Since the most intensive period for acquiring language skills is the first 3 years of life, when child’s brain is developing and maturing. . It does take a process, Since it is difficult for children to distinguish one language from another. Because they are growing up in a more challenging language environment, bilingual babies are simply learning flexible methods. Nevertheless, it is beneficial for children to learn more than one language
